As a member of the school orchestra and marching band, he learned how to play every woodwind instrument, though his primary instrument is still the clarinet. After graduating from high school, he worked for the Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston, Texas, while pursuing his studies in mechanical engineering.
Subsequently, Swindoll was assisted by the US Marine Corps in fulfilling his mandatory military service, initially in San Francisco and subsequently on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Among his responsibilities was playing in the Marine Corps Marching Band. After being honorably discharged in 1959, he enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he eventually earned a four-year magna cum laude degree.

Swindoll established Insight for Living, a radio program that airs on secular and Christian radio stations across the globe. The show airs on over 2000 stations and is streamed live online.
