After Obey made his announcement, Democrat Julie Lassa, a state senator, entered the race.
On June 4, 2010, he announced that he was leaving the Ashland County District Attorney’s office to concentrate on his congressional campaign. Three weeks after he resigned, Duffy went back to work for his father’s legal practice. He was elected to Congress on November 2, 2010, riding a wave of Republican victories across the country.
Various reports credit his success to a ten-month advantage over Lassa’s campaign, grassroots organization and funding, his experience as a district attorney, and voter discontent with the state of the economy.
