Barbara Davis Relationship with Parents
Davis’s ex-husband Gary Merrill supported Davis and claimed in a CNN interview that B. D. was motivated by “cruelty and greed” despite their acrimonious divorce from several years prior. B. D.’s adopted brother Michael Merrill broke off contact and wouldn’t talk to her again. Bette Davis disinherited B. D. and her grandchildren rather than splitting her estate between her personal assistant Kathryn Sermak and her adopted son Michael Merrill.
Barbara Davis Books
Hyman wrote two books that were extremely critical of her mother: My Mother’s Keeper (1985) and Narrow Is the Way (1987). Davis fell ill after suffering a stroke during the book’s publication, though the book’s writing was completed long before Davis’s illness, and Hyman faced harsh criticism for the timing of the book’s release. The author detailed her challenging mother-daughter relationship and included scenes of her domineering alcoholic mother in her book My Mother’s Keeper.
In a 60 Minutes interview that Mike Wallace rebroadcast a few years ago, Hyman praised Davis for her parenting skills when she (Hyman) was younger and said that she had taken many of Davis’s parenting principles to raise her own children. But unlike My Mother’s Keeper, the second book did not pique readers’ interest to the same extent.
Barbara Davis Ministry
Hyman, a born-again Christian, serves as both the director of her own ministry and the pastor of her Charlottesville, Virginia, church. Three of her books have been published by her ministry: Oppressive Parents: How to Leave Them and Love Them (1992), The Church is Not the Bride (2000), and The Rapture, the Tribulation, and Beyond (2002).
