Osama Bin Laden Murder

In February 2013, during Operation Neptune Spear, O’Neill told Esquire in an anonymous interview that he had killed Osama bin Laden. Several former members of the special forces released O’Neill’s name in late 2014 in protest over his breaking “a code of silence that forbids them from publicly taking credit for their actions.” This came before related pieces on the same subject from the Washington Post and Fox News. O’Neill claimed to have cornered bin Laden with an unidentified second member of SEAL Team Six; after the other SEAL fired and missed, O’Neill fatally shot the terrorist leader in the head.

Fellow SEAL Matt Bissonnette claims in No Easy Day that the deadly shots were fired by the unidentified point man. The Intercept quoted a former SEAL Team 6 member as saying that when O’Neill got to the terrorist leader, bin Laden was “bleeding out on the floor, possibly already dead, after being shot in the chest and leg by the lead assaulter on the raid.” According to a second SEAL, O’Neill just went up to the unmoving al-Qaeda chief and shot him twice in the head.

As of August 2020, neither the U.S. government nor Rear Admiral Brian L. Losey had refuted O’Neill’s claims, but Force Master Chief Michael Magaraci and Losey urged all SEALs to honor their rule of silence.
Regarding his decision to take credit for killing bin Laden, O’Neill remarked, “It’s a hard secret to keep, everyone was proud.” It was evident, I think, that we had succeeded. In 2015, O’Neill and his family were purportedly threatened by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
