Young engaged in a practice known as “listening and writing,” in which she prayed for serenity and the capacity to hear God, requests the help of the Holy Spirit, receives the message and gives thanks to the Lord for it, and then writes down what she claims to have been told.
Her writing has come under fire for portraying her own ideas and opinions as the message of the Lord because of her habit of writing in the first person. In response to these criticisms, Sarah defended herself by asserting that when she employed the pronoun “I” in her writing, it is as though God is speaking to the reader rather than Sarah.
